Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Andy was diagnosed with Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy in 1990. Other family members were tested for this inherited condition and Dad was found to also be affected. Whilst Andy was very open about this with family and friends, I understand that he may have not shared this information with work colleagues for fear of not getting any work.
In hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, muscle cells are misformed causing the heart wall to thicken and harden. This can lead to abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias), and ultimately to cardiac arrest. A post mortem has confirmed this to be the cause of his sudden death.
I am thankful that Andy had a great last day on Saturday 11th August seeing friends, Simon and Jenny, for tea and scones; and friends Paul and Glen for a drink at The Robin Hood’s Retreat Pub on Gloucester Rd, Bristol. Andy collapsed about 15 minutes after saying good bye to his friends; he was walking home and passers by called the alarm on Nevil Road. He died in A&E at 00:12 hours on 12th August; please take some comfort that he would not have suffered.
